- Scenario
- Setting up a document or template that requires a unique header layout on a specific page.
- Observed behavior
- By default, Word repeats headers across all pages. The goal is to isolate a specific header to just one page while keeping other pages blank or using a different header.
Before making changes, determine whether your unique header should be placed on the very first page of the document or on a specific middle page, as the steps for each scenario differ.
Isolate Headers Using Section Breaks and Unlinking
This is the most flexible method and is best when you need a custom header on a specific page other than the first page.
To apply a header to a single specific page, you must separate that page into its own section and break the connection between it and the surrounding pages.
Place your cursor at the end of the page just before where you want the unique header. Go to the 'Layout' tab, click 'Breaks', and select 'Next Page' under Section Breaks. Repeat this at the end of your target page to isolate it.
Double-click the header area of your target page. In the Header & Footer design tab, click 'Link to Previous' to turn it off. This disconnects it from the preceding pages.
Scroll down to the page immediately following your target page. Double-click its header and turn off 'Link to Previous' again so that it doesn't copy your unique header.
Return to your target isolated page and type or insert your custom header or letterhead. Because you disabled the links, this header will only appear on this specific page.

Use the Different First Page Feature
Use this built-in feature if the unique letterhead or header is only needed on the very first page of your document.

- 1. Open Document in WPS Writer: Launch WPS Office and open your text document.
- 2. Access Header Settings: Navigate to the 'Insert' tab and click on 'Header and Footer' to activate the editing mode.
- 3. Apply First Page or Section Settings: Click 'Header and Footer Options' to quickly toggle 'Different First Page', or use 'Page Layout' > 'Breaks' to isolate sections for middle pages.
- 4. Unlink and Customize: Use the 'Link to Previous' toggle right on the contextual ribbon to easily isolate your custom header to a single page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my header change on all pages when I only edit one?
By default, Word links headers across all sections of your document to keep styling consistent. To edit a header on a single page, you must insert a section break and disable the 'Link to Previous' option in the Header & Footer design tab.
Can I have a different header for odd and even pages?
Yes. Double-click the header area to open the design tab, and check the 'Different Odd & Even Pages' box. This allows you to set one header design for left-facing pages and another for right-facing pages.
How do I remove a header from only the last page?
Place your cursor at the end of the second-to-last page and insert a 'Next Page' section break. Then, double-click the header on the last page, turn off 'Link to Previous', and delete the header content. The headers on previous pages will remain intact.
Does removing 'Link to Previous' delete the existing header?
No. Turning off 'Link to Previous' simply breaks the synchronization between sections. You will still need to manually delete or modify the text in the newly unlinked section.
