Keep Continuous Page Numbers Across Word Sections and the Table of Contents
Product
Word
Device & OS
not provided
Scenario
Managing page numbering and updating the Table of Contents in a document that contains multiple section breaks.
Observed behavior
Page numbering unexpectedly restarts in different document sections, causing the Table of Contents to display repeated or discontinuous page numbers.
Before you start

Before modifying your page numbers, turn on the Show/Hide ¶ feature (Ctrl+*) on the Home tab to easily locate where section breaks are placed in your document.

Solution 1Recommended

Set Page Numbers to Continue from Previous Section

Apply the continuous numbering format to each section to prevent page sequences from restarting.

By default, inserting a new section break in Word might restart page numbering if the format was previously altered. You must explicitly tell Word to link the numbering sequence to the previous section.

1
Access Page Number Format

Click anywhere inside the section where the page numbering restarts. Go to the Insert tab on the top ribbon, click on Page Number in the Header & Footer group, and select Format Page Numbers from the dropdown menu.

2
Enable Continuous Numbering

In the Page Number Format dialog box, locate the Page numbering section at the bottom. Select the radio button next to 'Continue from previous section' and click OK.

3
Repeat for All Document Sections

Scroll through your document to the next section break and repeat this process for every section to ensure the numbering flows continuously from the first page to the last.

When to Restart Numbering: Use the 'Start at 1' option only for front matter (such as an introduction using roman numerals) or specific appendices that intentionally require entirely separate numbering sequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Table of Contents show page 1 multiple times?

This happens when your document contains multiple section breaks, and the page numbering is set to restart at '1' for each new section. Changing the page number format to 'Continue from previous section' resolves this issue.

Can I have roman numerals for the table of contents and regular numbers for the main text?

Yes. Insert a section break between the Table of Contents and the main text. Set the front matter's page number format to roman numerals. Then, click inside the main text section, go to Format Page Numbers, change the format to regular numbers, and select 'Start at 1'.

Do I have to update the page number settings for every section manually?

Usually, yes. If a document has many independent sections, you must apply the 'Continue from previous section' setting to each one. Alternatively, selecting the entire document (Ctrl+A) before opening the Format Page Numbers dialog can sometimes apply the continuous setting globally.

Why didn't my Table of Contents change after fixing the page numbers?

The Table of Contents does not update automatically in real-time when page numbers change. You must right-click the Table of Contents and select 'Update Field' to refresh the displayed page sequences.
